6 Unique Bamboo Products You’ll Love

There are tons of bamboo products on the market these days, from kitchenware to clothing. Standard retailers carry bamboo clothing, bamboo cutting boards, and even bamboo bedding, but unless you do a little research of your own, you might not know how many amazing and unique bamboo products are on the market today.

With such a strong following in the eco-friendly community, bamboo lovers are coming up with more and more ways to use this material in every day life. Check out some of our favorite unique and useful bamboo products below!

1) Bamboo Toothbrush

If you’re paying attention to the environment, you’ve probably heard about the great North Pacific Gyre, which is basically a whirlpool of garbage found off the coast of California, and it is mostly made up of plastic.

Go Bamboo offers biodegradable and sustainable products made from bamboo, and their bamboo toothbrush recently won them the coveted Green Ribbon Award for minimizing waste.  This toothbrush is made from bamboo, is 100% biodegradable, and is packaged in recycled cardboard.  When your toothbrush’s life has run its course, it can be disposed of in a compost bin, and its packaging can be recycled.

2) Bamboo Kites

6 foot Eagle kite made by Chen Zhau Ji of China. Its a really beautiful piece hand-made of silk and bamboo.

An eco-friendly way to have fun this summer, bamboo kites are a great way to keep the kids entertained without turning on the TV. They’re incredibly eco-friendly, and simple to make.

Bamboo kites have been used for charitable fundraising purposes as well, combining environmental and social responsibility. Last month, one of the student organizations at University of California – Davis hosted a Kites for a Cause event, whose proceeds benefit the street kids of Kabul.

3) Bamboo Fishing Rods

Bamboo fishing rods fell out of favor in the 1950s, and were considered relatively high-end expenditures over the years. With people turning to bamboo as an environment-friendly material, more and more fisherman are turning back to the trusty rod.

Bamboo rods run from $800 to $3000, and sometimes more, but that didn’t stop one Minnesota man. Phil Johnson, in his retirement, buys bamboo from China, and handcrafts a couple of bamboo fishing rods each year, in a painstakingly slow process.

Graphite rods are the current industry standard, since they’re light, strong, and powerful, but they’re nothing like bamboo. Many fishermen choose bamboo rods because they can actually feel every vibration, every tug, and every fish. Graphite is a popular material these days, but in the manufacturing process, it is controversial due to its environmental impacts. While graphite tends to cause air pollution and soil pollution, bamboo is revered for adding oxygen to the atmosphere, and preventing soil erosion.

4) Bamboo Charcoal / Deodorizer

We use air fresheners, candles, aerosol sprays, dehumidifiers, and chemical deodorizers to get our house’s climate and odor in order, but what about the environmental effects of these products?

Bamboo charcoal, as a deodorizer, is definitely one of the more unique ways of using bamboo. You can find bamboo charcoal deodorizers, soaps, and more, to keep the air in your home fresh, clean, and healthy.

5) Bamboo Wetsuits

You may be surprised to learn that bamboo is actually used as a material in wetsuits for surfers, divers, and snorkelers. Bamboo naturally regulates temperature, helping to retain warmth and resist moisture in these bamboo fiber wetsuits. The key to warmth and comfort is the thermo-bamboo lining of the Xcel wetsuits. It’s a revolutionary material for the sports world, and is a great way to avoid the non-sustainable materials that are normally used for wetsuits.

6) Bamboo Bicycles

Even though we’ve discussed bamboo bikes several times before, it’s really difficult to keep them off of this list. If you’re watching the world of bamboo, you know that they’re creating quite the ripple effect in third world countries around the world. In Indonesia, Africa, and China, bamboo bikes are helping to establish sustainable economies, as well as eco-friendly transportation methods.

Here in the United States, commuters in metropolitan areas are turning to these simple eco-efficient bikes for their daily transportation needs. Every bamboo conference spurs the creativity of innovative minds, bringing new and better ways to manufacture and design these amazing bamboo bikes. Be sure to read up on some of the ways you can help this industry grow for domestic and foreign uses.
